What is Mold?

Mold is a Fungus.

It is a normal part of our environment but when is grows inside our homes if can cause health issues and damage our structures.

Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided. Molds reproduce by means of tiny spores; the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air. Mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet.

Is Mold Dangerous?

Molds have the potential to cause health problems. Molds produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances. Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Allergic responses include hay fever-type symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash.

Allergic reactions to mold are common. They can be immediate or delayed. Molds can also cause asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mold. In addition, mold exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs of both mold-allergic and non-allergic people. Symptoms other than the allergic and irritant types are not commonly reported as a result of inhaling mold. Research on mold and health effects is ongoing.

How do I test for Mold?

You can test for mold in 2 primary ways:

(1) Use a kit from the store; or
(2) Have a professional perform a mold inspection and take air and surface samples with professional calibrated equipment.

Why Do I Have Mold?

Four things must be present for mold to grow:

(1) Mold Spores - Simply put, mold spores are everywhere with the possible exception of a clean room in a manufacturing environment. You have mold spores.

(2) Some Food Source - Mold can grow on almost anything. It grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, wood products, dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery. I bet you have a few of those things around the house.

(3) The Right Temperature - If it is too cold mold will not grow. Unfortunately mold likes the same temperatures we do.

(3) Moisture - Mold needs persistent moisture to grow. Something needs to stay we for 24 hours or longer (in general). Moisture is the x factor in mold growth. If you remove the mold and do not uncover and resolve the underlying moisture problem the mold will grow back.

John Mattox of Clarity Home Inspections did my radon testing and then I hired him to do the radon mitigation. Not only did he respond to my communications day or night but also did an amazing job on the installation. He was extremely knowledgeable explaining everything before hand and then showed up the day of the job with all the equipment and materials that he needed to do the installation the right way. John was thorough and did all the extras such as better PVC pipe, clear sump pump covers and insulation for the attic install. I would highly recommend John for any radon inspection and or mitigation. His home inspection process and documentation is excellent as well.
